To support one phase of a study of Modern Hebrew syntax. Contemporary linguistic theory attempts to provide an explicit description of the human language family. A variety of linguistic universals have been proposed largely on the basis of the grammar of English. The present study attempts to test theoretical claims by means of a detailed examination of aspects of the grammar of a non-western language with a structure quite unlike that of English.
