To examine the way women are portrayed in writings of the American colonial period particularly in New England. The aim of the study is to pull together portrayals of women in journals, letters, diaries of travels, sermons and essays as a clue to attitudes toward women in the culture. One outcome of the study will be a 20 to 30 page essay on portrayals of women by both men and women writers of the period.
