Recent Writing About Painting in Relation to Formalist Theories of Painting

To start collecting material and writing a large work on contemporary critical writing about painting and the relation of the painter to his society. Specifically, to analyze the writings of the two leading American critics, Clement Greenberg and Michael Fried, and to trace their relationship to a tradition of philosophical argument about these problems which go back to Kant.
