To produce a study of Mary Ritter Beard, a prototype of a particular kind of woman who was successfully able to combine scholarship and activism while maintaining a traditional commitment to home and family. It was her belief that women's history belonged, not outside they mainstream of historical writing, but integrated as part of a larger cultural context.
