To carry out research towards a book enlarging upon the theme of conscience and civil disobedience in literature. Study will focus upon the paradox of conscience, the frequent conflict between the social dimension and the intensely personal nature of the individual conscience. This paradox is related to one of the most vital, ongoing problems of American history: the maintenance of social stability in a country founded on revolution and revolutionary theory.
