To examine the nature and extent of American naval activities overseas during the period 1845-1861. The intent is to determine how extensive those activities were, what motivated them, and the nature of their relationship to American entreprenurial and missionary endeavors abroad. The study will eventually result in a second volume of a proposed multi-volume analysis of American naval diplomacy in the 19th century.
