The Politics of Early American Theatre

To examine a dispute over the licensing of theatre in Revolutionary New York. The study will show that the writers who attacked the stage did so in a manner that deliberately tied their cause to the large issue of the imperial crisis: namely a fundamental struggle to shape a republican ethic.
