To carry out systematic research on America as a pluralistic culture, focusing on the role of natural and social scientists, first in criticizing post-Darwinian scientific and lay theories of racial inferiority and superiority, then in offering new theories of race which have lent the perception of a pluralistic American culture much scientific respectability.
