To determine whether Freneau's published views on the American Indian, both in prose and poetry, were based on genuine convictions founded on experience or on fashionable thinking inspired by Rousseau's noble-savage doctrine. The study will identify all Freneau's writing dealing with the American Indian, analyze them, and search for any experience on sources.
