To study the American landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church (1826- 1900). Because of his detailed dairies, Church offers an excellent case history for an understanding of 19th century natural symbolism. The project will also add to our knowledge of landscape painting in the last century and a more precise idea of the symbolic content of Church's landscape motifs.
