To study the career of Sarah Josepha Hale, a leading popularizer of "Victorian" values concerning women and the home, through her work as editor of Godey's Lady's Book (1837-77). By studying a woman such as Mrs. Hale, one is reaching toward the values and self-understanding of average middle-class citizens of both sexes during the 19th century. Mrs. Hale was a leader of the first generation of American women who gave serious thought to what their role in American society ought to be.
