Polychromy in Achaemenid Relief Sculpture

FAIN: FT-12426-75

Judith A. Lerner
Smith College (Northampton, MA 01060-2916)

To study the use of color in Achaemenid relief sculpture of the sixth to fourth centuries B.C. in Iran. To travel to Iran and Turkey to see the remains of color on the reliefs at Persepolis and take samples of the pigment for laboratory analysis and to see the painted tombs of the sixth and fifth centuries B.C. that have recently been excavated in Lycia in south-central Turkey. P.I. has already had publications on reliefs which still bear remnants of color. Study will contribute toward the evaluation of the roles of Egypt and Greece in the development of Achaemenid art.
