To examine four illustrators of American children’s' books from 1905-70. The four (Gag, Ward, Sendak, and Keats) represent distinct eras in children’s' book illustrations. Project will place children’s' book illustrations within the context of the broad American culture, understanding its links to social, political, psychological, and artistic movements.
