A History of the University of Vienna, 1918-1938

FAIN: FT-12466-75

John J. Haag
University of Georgia (Athens, GA 30602-0001)

To carry out an historical study of the University of Vienna during the period between the 2 world wars. No historical study on this topic has appeared in print, although this was a crucial period not only for the University, but also for Austria and all of Central Europe. It was during these years that students and professors of Vienna became increasingly radicalized, so that by the early 1930s the great majority of them were either active Nazis or sympathizers of the Hitler movement. Several basic questions of historical causality will be sought and analyzed in this study, e.g. "Can people ever distinguish between ends and means in the midst of a crisis?"
