To study the initial modernization of China focusing on rural-urban interactions during the 19th and early 20th centuries. To examine marketing, migration and social mobility into and out of cities at various points in time, beginning with the period before the establishment of treaty ports by foreign powers. To reinterpret China's development during recent centuries through a new comparative perspective.
