To examine the fascination with the irrational and the perverse during the latter part of the French Enlightenment (approximately 1760-89). This summer's work will be restricted to an examination of the Marquis de Sade (1740-1814) and the perversions, especially sexual and violent, which have come to be designated as sadism.
