To complete a political biography of Harold L. Ickes (1874-1933) who spent 40 years as an energetic progressive reformer in Chicago and who became Secretary of Interior in 1933. Ickes was a central figure in the political and social controversies of the Roosevelt and Truman administrations. He was a fierce opponent of political corruption, a man of immense ambition and ego, and a highly skilled scrupulously honest administrator. This biography will make a major contribution to our understanding of the motives and goals of political reform.
