To study English perceptions of the New World slavery in the 16th and earlier 17th Centuries using documentary evidence in contemporary voyage literature, pro-colonial tract and sermon, political and philosophical essary, and general literature, especially the drama. The project will address itself in particular to the generation of a political rather than an ethical accommodation in England to the topical issue of slavery in the Americas.
