a long -range major study to determine the policies i and ideology underlying the pontificate of Pope Paschal II that was decisive in terminating the investiture conflict of Gregorian reform. Called by some historians "one of the four great world revolutions" the outcome of the investiture conflict has indeed determined the shape of the political as well as ecclesiastical institutions of Europe down to modern times. This is the second stage of a thesis and will analyse the crisis of 1111 within the framework of the ideological climate of the period based on the study of the humanistic, canonical and mystical writings of Hildebart of Lavardin, Ivo of Chartres, and Bernard of Clairvaux.
