New Garden, Pennsylvania Quakers and the American Revolution

FAIN: FT-12574-75

Susan S. Forbes
Brandeis University (Waltham, MA 02453-2728)

To study the effects of the American Revolution upon the average Pennsylvania Quaker who by the dictates of his society was bound to pacifism. The effect of the earlier Quaker reforms upon his reaction to the war will also be included in the research. The P.I. will examine the diaries, religious advises, meeting records and demographic materials of Quakers living in one 18th century community, New Garden, Pennsylvania. The study in a broad sense will result in a further understanding of the relationships between revolution and warfare on the one hand and religious values and conscience on the other.
