Part of a larger study of the Republican Party in Arkansas during reconstruction. Central purpose of the full project is to study how political institutions in Arkansas responded to the problems of post- Civil War adjustment, with particular reference to the status of the freedmen. Consideration will also be given to the way blacks functioned within the Republican Party and relations between white and black Republicans. The Republican parties created in the South during reconstruction were the first significant biracial institutions in the United States.
