To study the origins and early implementation of the Fourteenth Amendment with emphasis on the socio-political and theoretical factors that prompted Congress to propose the Amendment in the form that it took. In addition, project will examine how it influenced the military and the courts to apply it in the ways that they did from the 1860's to the mid-1880's.
