The Losing Side: An Organizational Analysis of American Loyalists

To assess the adequacy of each of three alternative explanations concerning the failure of the Loyalists to organize successfully against the American Revolutionary movement. Historians' interpretations are based on 3 ideas: (1) splits within the Loyalists made cooperative action impossible; (2) Loyalists failed to realize the significance of the threat posed by the Patriots; (3) Loyalists were so dependent on English sources for support that independent action was precluded.
