FAIN: FT-12640-75

Jean M. French
Bard College (Annandale-on-Hudson, NY 12504-9800)

To study a large group of Romanesque reliefs consisting of 9 figures of outstanding quality dispensed among several museums: two apostles in Rhode Island School of Design; a St. Peter in the Smith College Museum of Art: four apostles in the Duke University Art Museum; and an apostle and angel in the Memorial Art Gallery, University of Rochester. This large group poses many problems for the art historian, most important among which is the question of its provenance. The problem of the sculptures close relation to the capital sculpture of the Church of St. Martin in Brive, France will be analyzed. This study will make an important contribution to the knowledge and understanding of medieval art in the U.S., as well as in Europe.
