Burroughs, as a cultural figure, a hero who appears in many Beat novels and chronicles of the 1950s and serves a similar function to counter-cultural figures of the 1960s and 1970s; to examine the techniques of his genuinely experimental fiction and the radical techniques that underly it; and to examine the nature of his influence on younger American writers. No serious examinations of Burroughs and his place in contemporary American literature have appeared.
