Women and Education in the U.S., 1870-1910

To study the generation of women who attended major American teacher- training institutions from 1870 to 1910. This group of women (and the institutional filter through which P.I. is viewing them) will open a large range of questions about the "modernization" processes at work in the lives of late 19th century women. The group's social, religious, and geographic origins, their employment and family histories are among the variables to be isolated and studied. Particular attention will be paid to the life-cycle history of those who entered teaching as a career and did not marry. P.I. will compare the generation of women who inherited Benjamin Rush's advocacy of education for women immediate ly after the Revolution (1800-1850) with the 1870-1910 generation.
