To study the economic status, role, and function of the various classes of women at Mari. Mari was the capital of an important middle Euphrates kingdom in the Old Babylonian Period. A significant number of documents written to or by women have been excavated, and this feminine correspondence constitutes the most extensive corpus of documents concerning women known from the ancient near east.
