Dutch Bible Illustration

To examine text and illustration in a group of 15th century Dutch bibles in an attempt to discern their relation to late medieval religious expression. The results of the examination will be published in book form. Three topics will be explored: (1) the reasons for the inclusion of certain groups of unusual illustrations and textual passages; (2) the literature of the Modern Devotion--a lay and clerical Dutch religious movement; (3) the continuation of the iconographic and textual tradition in the 15th century hand-written Bibles through the 16th century printed examples. Approaching this group of Dutch Bibles as integrated books is an important methodological advance for the study of the humanities.
