British Strategy in the War for American Independence

FAIN: FT-12742-75

Ira D. Gruber
Rice University (Houston, TX 77005-1827)

To conduct a full scale study of British strategy in the American Revolutionary War, and an analysis of the origins and application of British military thought. The study will encompass an examination of British military ideas at the outset of fighting (military training of officers, for what qualities they had been selected), of how the British plans were shaped by patterns of previous wars in America, by events leading to the war, and by assumptions about the nature of the rebellion. Also included in the study will be an examination of how changes occurred in British strategy, attitudes, and resources.
