To study urban development in the time of the American Revolution (1760-1800), in an attempt to analyze both social structure and economic development in several American cities. The principal issues in studying these cities (Providence and Newport, R.I., Charleston, S.C., Savannah, Ga., and Norfolk, Va.) include population growth, family structure, economic mobility, leadership, and the effect of the Revolution on both economic growth and society.
