A book-length study on the history of Upper and Lower California during the era of Spanish control--1533-1821. No major work on this subject has been published for more than 50 years and the need for a synthesis of the results of new research is great. Study will incorporate both original documentary sources and recent monographic studies to reinterpret the entire period for the modern reader. Indian-Spanish relations will be reevaluated in the light of new anthropological findings and studies by modern church historians to give a balanced view of the mission system. Also included will be scientific advancement and international cooperation, especially during the late 18th century.
