The Place of the Ephesus Reliefs in Roman Imperial Art

The grant will support the recipient's study of sculptured relief portraying battles between the Romans and Eastern barbarians. The sculpture represents an otherwise unknown sculptural tradition, and records Antonine history with regard to the eastern provinces. The aim of the project is to produce the only complete photographic record of the sculpture, and to assess the controversy over the dating, sculptural style, and content of the relief.
