To study conscience and casuistry in Colonial New England. Reviewing first the English material of the 16th and 17th centuries, then tracing the development of cauistry through treatises and sermons of early Americans and finally offering a reading of literature from the perspective a cauistry using poetry, diaries and journals of colonial Americans.
