To analyze Katherine Anne Porter's Mexican fiction in the light of her own essays on Mexican history, sociology, psychology, religion and art. Her stories and essays will be placed in the larger context c the Mexican culture which absorbed her interest in the twenties. She was sympathetic with and fascinated by the Mexican peasant who eternally preserves his ancient past in the present and suffers at the hands of those who cannot respect him or his past.
