To examine the initial development of Sino-American relations, which originated in the 1780's with American and Chinese merchants. An analysis of Chinese attitudes and policies toward Americans may alter the standard treatment of this period and contribute to a more balanced view of Sin-American contact as well as Sino-Western contact.
