Study will take form of a catalogue raisonne of oscilla (sculpted marble shields designed to be suspended between columns of a colonnade) from Pompeii, accompanied by a discussion of their importance as decorative art in specific Roman households, a study of their production by various artistic workshops, and a discussion of their subject matter as evidence of Roman literary and artistic culture prior to 79 A.D.
