A study of the legal institution of South Carolina during the middle of the nineteenth century. This will include an examination of the social order that prevailed prior to the Civil War, and the social order that was constructed subsequent to the war. Some of the particular objects of consideration will be the status of Negroes under the law, land law, family law, criminal justice, and state sovereignty.
