To study the conflict within the New England Irish community between internal and external opportunities for social mobility. To determine why the Irish continued to lag behind other European white immigrants in upward mobility on the social ladder. The effect of social identities such as ethnicity, class, occupation, age, sex, kinship, and friendship on the social mobility of the Irish will be used as sources for examination.
