To complete research and write a history of the Irish Renaissance, 1880-1940. During this period, Yeats, Joyce, Synge, and O'Casey and other literary figures created literary movements of lasting importance This material has had piecemeal and specialized attention, but has not been presented as a coherent whole in a way comprehensible to most American readers. Sections of the study will be devoted to examination of political and social history, Irish writing before 1880, and a decade-by-decade analysis and description of the literary movement. Anglo-Irish literature is coming to be seen as an important third to English and America.
