To continue work on a book to be called Novels of the 1740s. This critical study will attempt to illuminate the 1740s, treating the general cultural background, the minor fiction of the era, placing the major novels in some intelligible relation to the minor, and examining the major novels as individual works of art, rising "new" from the contemporary background.
