To study the influence of late classical epic poetry—Nonnus, Claudian, Colluthus, Triphidorus, and a few others-on the literary culture of the Renaissance. PI will examine the handling of these classical texts by Renaissance scholarship, and at their use in Renaissance literature, through translation, imitation, and spot quotation or allusion in otherwise independent works, so as to assess carefully and in detail the long-recognized affinities of spirit between the literatures of these two periods.
