To research in England and France in an attempt to localize the origins of the Canterbury sculptural workshop. The transmission of artistic ideas and forms by workshops of itinerant craftsman was a dominant feature of the Middle Ages. At Canterbury there is the marriage of an architectural workshop from one region and a sculptural workshop from another. PI will study: (1) the nationality of the two workshops; (2) the participation of these two workshops in other English projects outside Canterbury; and (3) the importance of the Canterbury material for a reevaluation of the indigenous elements of later English Gothic architecture.
