To examine popular "entertainers”, a group of performers on the London state in the 19th century. Study aims l) to identify as many of the performers and their repertoires as possible; 2) to trace the histories and fates of the various entertainments; 3) to determine how these entertainments were related to other forms; 4) to ascertain what motives may have prompted performers to offer entertainments or to so label their performances; and 5) to try to gain some sense of contemporary tastes and values as revealed in the substance and appeal of these entertainments.
