To examine the most significant histories written by 18th century French historians in order to be able to demonstrate the exact relationship between 17th century authors of histoires raisonnees and authors of the Enlightenment. PI will examine the histoires raisonnees as a genre in the context of the cultural and philosophical milieu of the 17th century, explain its roots in the 16th century humanist narrative tradition.
