To examine the relationship between industry-induced environmental transformations and society in the Scranton, Pennsylvania, region for the period 1850-1950. This will be compared with the previously analyzed European cases. The research examines (1) the uneven impacts of industry-induced environmental transformations on different groups of the population and subsequent social changes; (2) the changing individual and social valuations of environmental transformations; and (3) the policy dimension in issues of environmental deterioration.
