To support preliminary field and archival research in a small community of 400 Tzotzil-speaking Indians in the State of Chiapas, Mexico. The village is made up entirely of descendants of political exiles who were banished from their home in Chamula in 1911 as punishment for their role in an "Indian Rebellion" which they called the War of Santa Rosa. PI will study how the community views itself, its ethnic identity, its historical background and its future. PI will use oral history as well as library sources.
