To complete a research project which will: 1) produce a badly needed description and analysis of the day-to-day functioning of the secular church and its impact on society; 2) relate the social history (family structure, social mobility, career patterns, etc.) of the members of the secular clergy to the functioning of the institution of the secular church; and 3) comparatively study the first two elements for the archdiocese of Lima and Mexico, the two major administrative and cultural centers of the Spanish empire in the New World.
