PI will investigate the history of Islamic institutions under British colonial rule and their evolution during the nationalist period, and will focus upon a literate, scholarly group - the mallams—and the manner in which their networks and activities integrate Kano's society and reinterpret ancient values in order to approach modern problems. PI will also analyze the popular and unique Islamic cultural institutions such as the Hajj in order to illustrate the blend of ancient and modern that creates popular urban culture in Kano.
