To study the relationship between American Catholicism and the culture of the Enlightenment, in both its European and American phases. PI will attempt to discover whether or not the American Catholics did attempt to synthesize their faith with their understanding of the Enlightenment and to trace, if possible, the transmission of ideas between American and European Catholics during the period of John Carroll (1735-1815), the first bishop of Charleston South Carolina.
