To study the nature of black political leadership from 1865-1877 and its impact on the reconstruction process. PI will study the work done by black leaders and will evaluate the influence exerted by them and determine how much power they actually had. Initial research reveals both a surprising continuity and a high-level of quality of black leadership through Reconstruction.
